What is Climate change and Global Warming

The terms “climate change” and “global warming” are often used interchangeably, but they actually have distinct meanings. Climate change refers to the long-term shifts in temperature and typical weather patterns in a place. Global warming refers to the long-term rise in Earth’s average surface temperature.

So, while climate change encompasses global warming, it also includes other changes in Earth’s climate system, such as changes in precipitation patterns, sea level rise, and extreme weather events.

Global warming is caused by human activities that release greenhouse gases into the atmosphere. Greenhouse gases trap heat from the sun, which warms the planet. The main greenhouse gases are carbon dioxide, methane, and nitrous oxide.

Human activities that release greenhouse gases include burning fossil fuels for electricity, heat, and transportation; deforestation; and agriculture.

So, while global warming is one aspect of climate change, it is not the only one. Climate change also includes changes in precipitation patterns, sea levels, and extreme weather events.

The effects of climate change are already being felt around the world. We are seeing more extreme weather events, such as heat waves, droughts, floods, and wildfires. Sea levels are rising, which is threatening coastal communities. And changes in precipitation patterns are making it harder to grow food in some areas.

Climate change is a serious threat to our planet and our way of life. We need to take action now to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and mitigate the effects of climate change.

However, in 2021, the EPA under the Biden administration restored the climate change webpages to its website. The EPA also announced a new climate action plan that includes ambitious goals for reducing greenhouse gas emissions.

The EPA and NASA are both committed to providing science-based information about climate change. They believe that this information is essential for policymakers and the public to make informed decisions about how to address climate change

Climate change is having a significant impact on the ocean, land, and atmosphere:

Ocean:

  • Rising sea levels: As the ocean warms, it expands and sea levels rise. This is already causing coastal flooding and erosion, and it is expected to get worse in the future.
  • Ocean acidification: The ocean absorbs carbon dioxide from the atmosphere, which makes the water more acidic. This is harmful to marine life, especially coral reefs.
  • Heat waves: The ocean is warming faster than the atmosphere, and this is leading to more frequent and intense heat waves. These heat waves can be deadly for marine life and can also affect coastal communities.
  • Marine heatwaves: Marine heatwaves are periods of abnormally warm water that can last for weeks or months. They can cause widespread damage to marine ecosystems, including coral bleaching, fish kills, and seabird die-offs.

Land:

  • Droughts: Climate change is causing more frequent and severe droughts in many parts of the world. This is drying out soils, making it harder to grow crops and causing wildfires.
  • Heat waves: Climate change is also causing more frequent and severe heat waves on land. These heat waves can be deadly for people and animals, and they can also damage infrastructure.
  • Storms: Climate change is making storms more intense. This is leading to more flooding, erosion, and damage to property.

Atmosphere:

How climate change is caused:

The scientific consensus is that climate change is real, it is caused by human activity, and it is a serious threat to our planet. The Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC), the leading international body for the assessment of climate change, has concluded that it is extremely likely that human activities caused more than half of the observed increase in global mean surface temperature from 1951 to 2010. The IPCC also concluded that climate change is already having a significant impact on the planet, and it is expected to get worse in the future.

It is also important to note that climate change is not just caused by human activity. Natural processes, such as volcanic eruptions and solar activity, can also contribute to climate change. However, the vast majority of climate change is caused by human activity.

We need to take action to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and mitigate the effects of climate change. We can do this by switching to renewable energy sources, reducing our reliance on fossil fuels, and making changes to our lifestyles. If we don’t act now, the future of our planet is at stake.
